Introduction
As a fashion, Uswidi is a response to the the gradually globalizing "sex obsessed" culture that is pressuring all women to become "sexy" around the world. Most especially, it responds the traditional position of hypersexualizing black women, who are often marginalized as video vixens and "ghetto girls."
A lovely young lady dressed in African fabric, with a vintage church hat and gloves.
As you can see in this image, this young lady is wearing African ankara print on her clothes, with a pair of hand gloves and a fascinator hat. This is the kind of afro/vintage fusion the fashion aims for.
These young ladies are wearing African Ankara print on their blouses, and a pair gloves to provide a vintage edge. Both are also wearing skirts that poof, and do not cling to the body. Please note, if you are unsure about buying African ankara prints (since they can be pricy and impossible to find in retail stores), try working with African animal prints, or look for clothing that has tribal/abstract motifs. You may have a few items in your wardrobe you can use!
Unless the hair is fully shaven, Uswidi usually style their hair with straightened bangs, mixing it with Pan-African hairstyles that typically don't show a whole lot of scalp.
As you can see here, this lady is sporting afro textured, tight curls with bangs. |
This lady's hair mixes long afro textured hair with straight bangs. |
This can be done with long hair, as well. Although the lady in black is obviously not dressed in the Uswidi style, her straight bangs and curly hair is a correct representation of how to achieve the "fusion" kind of look. Another idea is to wear headwraps, showing off straightened bangs to get the same kind of effect, like the lady in the image below.
Please have fun with this style, and be creative! Fashion is meant to be a fun and expressive experience.
